Modern Foreign Languages
MFL Curriculum Intent Statement
At Sacred Heart Catholic Academy, our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is designed to develop students' foreign language skills in understanding and communication while integrating our core values of respect, ambition, service, and love. The acquisition of a foreign language is a life-enhancing skill, which broadens one’s horizons and teaches respect through an insight into another culture and way of life. Our curriculum fosters ambition by challenging students to achieve academic excellence and inspire our pupils to look out to the world beyond the confines of our everyday lives. We aim to show how the ability to speak multiple languages is a skill which can be used in both the community and the workplace in the service of others. Love is central to our ethos, creating a supportive and nurturing environment where students feel valued and inspired to express themselves freely and build meaningful relationships. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive Modern Foreign Languages curriculum that shapes students into respectful, ambitious, service-oriented, and loving individuals, equipped with the skills to make a positive contribution to society.
Our curriculum is built upon the three language pillars of phonics, vocabulary and grammar. It follows a logical and stepped sequence of grammatical knowledge to develop and progress their foreign language acquisition. Our aim is that our curriculum will be adapted and therefore accessible to all students so that they are able to respond to spoken and written language, to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, and to write accurately at varying length, using the grammatical structures they have learnt.
